 WELL, I believe that lighthill badly misses the importance
 of ai. This is in developing (1) theories of
 intelligence (2) new kinds of models of all sorts of things.
 I think you are much too conservative in assessing the
 accomplishments of the field in its less than
 twenty ye!rs (many cognitive psychologists are accepting a lot of it now).
 For instance, LOGO and Papert's recent extensions of Piaget
 are (i think) very important, though simple-minded to us.
 Robotics is important in its own right, and also as a fine
 playground for artificial systems. Michie is unimportant.
 The really important thing would be to encourage three or four centers
 in Great Britain for smart youngsters to develop, and Edinboroungh
 has a good start, though contaminated by too much logic, tree-search
 and other early throwbacks.
